FCC Chair Faces Ethics Violation Allegations

by Sofia Alvarez

WASHINGTON D.C. — The Freedom of the Press Foundation has lodged a formal complaint against Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr, alleging violations of legal ethics. The organization claims Carr exploited his official capacity to intimidate media entities and facilitate a “shakedown” of Paramount Global, raising serious ethical questions about his conduct.

FCC Chair Accused of Misusing Office

The foundation’s complaint targets Carr’s role in the FCC’s approval of the $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance Media. This deal followed a significant $16 million settlement by Paramount with President Donald Trump, stemming from a defamation case discussed on 60 Minutes.

  • Freedom of the Press Foundation filed ethics complaint against FCC Chair Brendan Carr.
  • Carr is accused of threatening media outlets and pressuring Paramount Global.
  • The complaint centers on Carr’s alleged use of the FCC to influence a settlement related to a Trump defamation case.
  • Potential sanctions for Carr, if pursued by the D.C. Bar, range from reprimand to disbarment.

Central to the complaint is the assertion that Carr “used the FCC as a tool to pressure Paramount into settling a meritless lawsuit with Trump, paving the way for the merger’s approval.” This action, the complaint argues, contravenes fundamental ethical standards concerning honesty, misuse of office, and interference with the justice system.

Broad Accusations of Political Misconduct

The Freedom of the Press Foundation’s allegations extend to Carr’s alleged breaches of conduct rules, including those prohibiting prejudicial conduct and the abuse of office for political ends. The complaint points to Carr’s reported threats against MSNBC, investigations into ABC and NBC News, and increased scrutiny of public broadcasting and reporting on immigration-related matters.

Carr, who previously voiced intentions to advance President Donald Trump’s agenda during his tenure at the FCC, is accused by the foundation of transforming the agency into a “censoring machine” to achieve this political objective. Neither Carr nor the D.C. Bar has issued public comments regarding the complaint. Should the D.C. Bar decide to investigate further, the potential consequences for Carr could include anything from a formal reprimand to the revocation of his license to practice law.
