The Bundesbank should receive reinforcements from the ranks of the FDP. The previous state head of Baden-Württemberg is to move to its board.
The federal government is proposing the FDP politician Michael Theurer for the Bundesbank board. Several media outlets report this unanimously. The “Handelsblatt” first reported the personnel. Theurer is currently Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, and the economist is also the Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport. Since 2013 he has also been state chairman of the FDP Baden-Württemberg. The FDP-led finance ministry said Theurer’s qualifications were beyond question. The Bundesbank declined to comment.
The proposal will be followed by a hearing, followed by an official appeal if necessary. Government circles said the personnel would not be brought to the cabinet for confirmation on Wednesday. There were recently three vacant positions on the board, which normally has six members. But one of them has now been clarified. The former finance minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lutz Lienenkämper (CDU), is to move to the Bundesbank at the suggestion of the NRW state government. In addition to the federal government, the state of Hesse can also fill another position. This position has been open for a very long time.
Party conference at the weekend
As the “Handelsblatt” further reported, the federal government will also propose Bundesbank board member Sabine Mauderer as Bundesbank Vice President. The deputy position became vacant after the incumbent Claudia Buch moved to the top of the ECB banking supervision at the beginning of the year.
With Theurer, a politician who belongs to the FDP has been moving onto the Bundesbank board for a long time. The Liberals are holding their party conference this weekend. On Monday, the FDP presidium passed a resolution with twelve points “to accelerate the economic turnaround”. This includes, among other things, a reform of citizens’ benefits, the abolition of pensions at 63, tax advantages for overtime and the complete abolition of the solidarity surcharge.
