A lifelong dream has come true for him: State Secretary Michael Theurer is taking on a new job at the Bundesbank. His successor is still unknown.

FDP politician Michael Theurer is moving to the board of the Bundesbank. The Federal Cabinet decided on his appointment on Wednesday, as the German Press Agency learned from government circles. This confirmed media reports. A hearing for Theurer at the Bundesbank will follow.

Former North Rhine-Westphalian Finance Minister Lutz Lienenkämper (CDU) was also appointed to the Bundesbank’s Executive Board at the suggestion of the Bundesrat. Board member Sabine Mauderer is to become Vice President of the Bundesbank.

Theurer is currently State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Commissioner for Rail Transport. He is also currently the state chairman of the FDP in Baden-Württemberg.

Theurer told the German Press Agency that the Federal Cabinet’s nomination for the Bundesbank Executive Board was a great honor that filled him with humility. “For me personally, this is of course a turning point, a real change. 40 years of politics in honorary and full-time positions will come to an end; this is what neutrality on the Bundesbank Executive Board demands.” However, further procedural steps are necessary first, and we have to wait and see.

Theurer told the “Neckar-Chronik” about his move: “For me as an economist, a lifelong dream has come true.” Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) asked him in the spring whether he would accept if he was offered the position. Throughout his life, he has been involved with finance, budgets and currencies – at the local level, in the state, as a member of the European Parliament and most recently at the federal level.
