At the end of April, 2 Cochrane reviews appeared in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews to the effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) on recurrences Clostridium difficileinfections and inflammatory bowel disease. Disturbed gut flora (dysbiosis) are thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders.

From the first review including data from 6 trials with 320 participants found that FMT is an effective treatment for recurrent infections with Clostridium difficile. Of those who received a faecal transplant, 77% did not develop a re-infection in a period of 8 weeks after treatment, compared to 40% of those treated with antibiotics alone (standard vancomycin therapy).

In the second review based on 12 studies with a total of 550 participants, the effect of FMT on inflammatory bowel disease was analyzed. FMT has been shown to help people with active ulcerative colitis achieve clinical and endoscopic remission. These results are promising, but further research is needed for definitive conclusions, including into side effects, quality of life and maintenance of remission. Only 1 study looked at the effect of FMT in people with Crohn’s disease and the results were inconclusive.
