Most of the leaders of the Federal Reserve (Fed, US central bank) were inclined to cut rates at the end of July interest rates at the next meeting of the body in September, according to excerpts from their last meeting released yesterday.

At the last meeting of the Fed At the meeting held on July 30 and 31, “several members (of the Monetary Policy Committee) stressed that recent progress in the fight against inflation and rising unemployment are pushing in favor of a 25 basis point cut” in the reference interest rates in September, according to extracts from the minutes of that meeting, known as “minutes.”

But “the vast majority stress that if the data continues on the expected trajectory, it would be probably appropriate to relax monetary policy during the next meeting.”

The “minutes” also point out the “confidence” of the members of the FOMC in the face of data showing that “inflation is heading towards the organization’s goal” of 2% annually.

Markets have been nervous in recent weeks, even fearing a recession in USA, in a context of high interest rates to contain inflation. High interest rates make credit more expensive and discourage consumption and investment, thus moderating price pressures.
