The popular car can really make a comeback! The eventual return of the segment had already provoked discussions between assemblers and automotive associations. Now, the Federal Government is also considering this possibility and is already working with simulations to understand the feasibility.

  • Initially, the popular car came as a strategy for automakers in times of crisis in the 1990s, to heat up the economy.
  • Currently, a return can also come to help vehicle sales.
  • According to the director of the Development Department for High-Medium Technological Complexity of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Margarete Gandini, this debate is important because the automobile industry has operated with 50% idleness.
  • The math is not so simple: converting the value of a popular car from the 1990s to 2023 only according to inflation, the price would exceed R$80,000.
  • That’s because cars now have more modern items, in addition to mandatory safety requirements.
  • Gandini has already confirmed studies at the government level to create conditions for a cheaper car, which increases the number of sales at dealerships.

Measures for the return

The director stated that discussions with vehicle dealerships are taking place, based on the proposal of the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution (Fenabrave), but nothing has been defined. The idea is to come up with a viable model for the popular car.

According to Auto Indústria, the vehicle should not exceed R$ 50,000, but for that, it will probably be a compact model, with low power and fueled only with ethanol. Currently, the cheapest model in Brazil is the Renault Kwid, which costs around R$70,000.

Gandini recalled that the issue of CO2 emissions has been essential in the discussions and argues that, for the return, it is necessary to create better financing conditions for Brazilians. She did not comment on the release of the use of part of the FGTS to buy a car.

Rota 2030

The president of Anfavea, Márcio de Lima Leite, had already stated that the second phase of Rota 2030 should be ready by June of this year.

The federal program provides incentives and support for the development of the automotive industry.
