One of the country’s most prolific federal narcotics prosecutors, Joseph Ruddy, was caught on camera offering his business card to police in an attempt to avoid being charged in a hit-and-run incident while under the influence. The incident took place on July 4, outside Ruddy’s residence in Tampa, Florida.

Footage obtained by the Associated Press shows Ruddy, who appeared heavily intoxicated, hunched over his pickup truck as the police arrived at the scene. In a desperate attempt to evade charges, Ruddy waved his business card towards the approaching officers as he struggled to stand upright.

Ruddy’s actions were met with skepticism by the officer, who asked him, “What are you trying to hand me?” The officer warned Ruddy that his body-worn camera footage would expose his actions, which would have severe consequences for him. A witness informed the police that Ruddy did not attempt to brake during the crash, further implicating him.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Ruddy fled from the hit-and-run scene. When confronted by the officer about his actions, Ruddy admitted to running away, claiming that he didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation. However, Ruddy’s blood-alcohol level was found to be twice the legal limit at 0.17%.

Ruddy was charged with driving under the influence with property damage, but not leaving the scene of an accident. He is accused of sideswiping an SUV, causing damage to the vehicle and tearing off a piece that was found lodged in his truck’s fender.

Despite being charged with a DUI, Ruddy continued to represent the United States in court, appearing as recently as last week. However, the Justice Department confirmed that he has been removed from his supervisory role at the US Attorney’s Office in Tampa and pulled off three pending criminal cases.

Ruddy, known for being one of the creators of Operation Panama Express (PANEX), a task force aimed at combating cocaine smuggling, has significantly contributed to the success of the initiative. More than 90% of US Coast Guard drug interdictions at sea can be attributed to intelligence provided by PANEX.

Ruddy is scheduled to appear in court for his case on September 27.
