“The adoption of the decision by the Federation Council today on consent to the use of armed forces is aimed at establishing peace in the Donbass. It is aimed at stopping this bloody civil war, in order to prevent further shelling of peaceful settlements, civilians, in order to create normal conditions for people’s lives and ensure security,” said Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council.

Today, Vladimir Putin signed the law “On Ratification of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation and the Lugansk People’s Republic.” The document entered into force on the day of its official publication. According to the clauses of this agreement, the parties will be able to use the military infrastructure and military bases in each other’s territories.

Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the DPR and LPR yesterday, February 21. Europe and the United States have promised to impose sanctions against Russia. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the decision to recognize the sovereignty of the DPR and LPR an encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
