(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 21 – “In Italy there is a positive trend for infrastructure: highways, railways, bridges. Thanks to the PNRR funds, our country has become an interesting market for cement producers. But Italian companies must face competition from countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia. These are countries that do not have EU taxation of emissions, the ETS system, and can invade our market with products at lower prices”. This was stated to ANSA by the new president of Federbeton, the association of cement companies, Stefano Gallini. According to Gallini, “in a few months the price of CO2 in the European Union will be around 75 euros per ton. And the trend of the ETS (the European taxation of emissions, ed.) is rising, towards 100 euros. We have neighboring countries in North Africa that do not have a focus on decarbonization, and do not have this increase in costs. Italian companies, which produce almost exclusively for the national market, risk being sidelined”. In 4 years, imports from North Africa and Turkey have increased by 582%. Federbeton therefore asks for “a dialogue with the government, to work on solutions. We would like a system that makes our business sustainable, both from an environmental and economic point of view”. (ANSA).
