Shanghai – FedEx is expanding its commitment to sustainable logistics with the launch of a new on-site solar installation at its Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub. The project, completed recently, marks a significant step in the company’s broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and build a more resilient supply chain in the Asia Pacific region. This initiative positions FedEx as the first logistics company operating within the cargo area of Shanghai Pudong International Airport to generate its own solar power.
The installation covers more than 4,000 square meters of existing parking facilities at the hub. FedEx anticipates the system will generate approximately 743,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, primarily supporting office operations and increasing the proportion of renewable energy used at the facility. According to company estimates, this translates to a reduction of nearly 417 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year compared to electricity generated from coal-based power sources. The system is similarly projected to reduce particulate matter emissions by 2.1 tons and sulfur dioxide emissions by 4.21 tons annually, contributing to improved air quality in the region.
Expanding Renewable Energy Across Asia Pacific
This project in Shanghai is part of a larger, ongoing investment in renewable energy projects throughout the Asia Pacific. In South Korea, the FedEx Incheon Gateway has been utilizing 2,400 rooftop solar panels since November 2022, currently generating around 19 percent of the facility’s monthly energy needs. Beyond solar power, the Incheon Gateway also employs fully LED lighting, resulting in energy savings of over 22,000 kilowatt-hours per year. Further north, a rooftop solar system at FedEx’s North China Regional Headquarters in Beijing became operational in 2023, adding to the company’s growing clean energy capacity.
Singapore is also a key part of this expansion. The FedEx South Pacific Regional Hub has been powered by on-site solar energy since January 2025, with renewable sources now meeting more than half of the hub’s electricity demands. Notably, the solar installation in Singapore directly supports the charging of FedEx’s electric vehicle fleet, demonstrating a combined approach to reducing emissions through both clean energy generation and transport electrification.
A Key Region for Sustainable Growth
FedEx views the Asia Pacific region as crucial for future growth, and the company emphasizes that building a sustainable logistics network is essential for long-term success. “Asia Pacific is a key trade region, and future growth will depend on building a more resilient and sustainable logistics system,” a FedEx spokesperson stated. To date, FedEx has generated over 31 gigawatt-hours of solar energy from more than 30 locations worldwide, showcasing a global commitment to renewable energy sources.
The company’s sustainability efforts extend beyond solar power. FedEx is actively expanding its electric vehicle fleet, which currently includes over 8,000 vehicles globally. In China, more than 25 percent of FedEx operations are now electrified, and the adoption of electric vehicles is also growing in countries like Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Thailand. FedEx is leveraging digital tools, artificial intelligence, and automation technologies to enhance efficiency and minimize its environmental impact.
These technological advancements are being implemented alongside community engagement initiatives. Through the FedEx Cares program, the company collaborates with local organizations on environmental projects. Employee participation in these programs increased in the last financial year, with activities including tree planting, mangrove restoration, and riverbank clean-ups contributing to regional sustainability efforts.
Looking Ahead: Continued Investment in Sustainability
FedEx’s commitment to sustainability is not a one-time effort, but rather an ongoing process of innovation and investment. The company continues to explore new technologies and partnerships to further reduce its environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future for the logistics industry. The next major milestone for FedEx’s sustainability initiatives will be the release of its annual sustainability report in June, which will detail progress made and future goals.
