If bank rates are rather stable or slightly increasing (2%) according to the results published by the Banking Rates Observatory, led by the Financial Sector Advisory Committee, which depends on the Banque de France, there is one area where the banks have been overusing themselves for several years: that of the fees collected when settling an inheritance. And this even though Bercy asked them more than a year ago to significantly reduce them. These only drop by a few cents on average. “Of the 128 establishments studied by the MoneyVox site, 118 have changed nothing, 2 (Crédit agricole Sud Méditerranée and BNP Paribas Réunion) have significantly lowered them while remaining above the average, and 8 have increased them, including 3 strongly (30% for the Banques populaire Aquitaine Centre, Atlantique and Méditerranée)”, notes Maxime Chipoy, president of MoneyVox.

The differences between establishments are enormous. “The prices vary from simple to tenfold for identical work”, again denounces Maxime Chipoy. Particularly within regional banks. Crédit Agricole is one of the cheapest establishments in the North (50 euros for an inheritance of 15,000 euros – the estimated average amount of the deceased’s accounts and passbooks – paid in less than a year to heirs who are clients of another bank), in Île-de-France (80 euros), in the Loire-Haute Loire region (118 euros), but it is also one of the most expensive banks in Languedoc (390 euros) and in the Center West (300 euros). Prices range from 0 to 450 euros. The average is 205 euros; 50% of banks are above 195.50 euros, 50% below.

For an inheritance of €15,000 paid to heirs who are clients of another bank

The pricing method varies depending on the establishment. There are those who have a single package regardless of the amount of the inheritance, like Fortuneo, which asks for 300 euros; those whose package varies depending on the amount, such as La Banque Postale, which takes 0 euros up to 500 euros, 100 euros from 500 to 5,000 euros, 250 euros from 5,000 to 15,000 euros and 500 euros beyond; those who take a percentage (between 1 and 1.5%) of the amount, such as HSBC (0.90% with a minimum of 150 euros and a maximum of 950 euros); and finally those which mix flat rate and percentage, like BNP Paribas: free up to 200 euros, 90 euros from 200 to 3,000 euros, 90 euros + 1% beyond with a maximum of 750 euros.

Only a few online banks do not charge any fees (Nickel, Revolut, Helios, etc.). The service is also free at BoursoBank up to a certain ceiling, which it has just raised to 25,000 euros compared to 20,000 euros previously. Beyond that, it deducts 250 euros regardless of the amount of the inheritance.

To escape these charges, the heirs have no other solution than to leave the money in the deceased’s bank by opening an account – free of charge – in the establishment, and then make transfers. But be careful, when opening the account, you will be offered paid services (card, etc.)! §
