“I have apologized to my colleagues on behalf of the Spanish people.” This is how the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has summarized his intervention before the representatives of the European PP at the usual meeting of political families held in Brussels before the European summits. Feijóo has once again used his limited presence in the EU to attack the Government, now for the role played so far in the conflict between Israel and Gaza, but also for the possible amnesty that Pedro Sánchez is negotiating with Junts.

The 27 negotiate a minimum agreement in the face of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza so as not to snub Israel

Feijóo reported in a press conference that in his speech behind closed doors before the leaders of the national parties allied in the EPP he “condemned the attacks” committed by Hamas on October 7, and recognized “the right of the Israeli people to legitimate defense.” Something that, he has said, is “perfectly compatible with asking that international law be respected and humanitarian aid be preserved.”

That is the position of the EU, he continued, to criticize that the Spanish Government does not respect this position. “Our Government has shamed us again,” she snapped, because some of its members “have said things like that Israel is producing a Genocide or that [el primer ministro israelí, Benjamin] Netanyahu must appear before the International Criminal Court.” Words that “the acting president has not disavowed,” nor has he “fired those people who are part of his government for defending anti-European approaches.”

Feijóo concluded: “I honestly believe that we cannot accept these positions. Mr. Sánchez has taken two weeks to speak with Netanyahu. Rains, it pours. “We made a fool of ourselves for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when we hosted the NATO summit, and we do it again in the conflict against Hamas terrorism.”

The leader of the PP has also revealed to journalists that he has met with the Commissioner of Justice, the Belgian Didier Reynders, who in recent weeks has indicated that his department will be pending the hypothetical amnesty law that the PSOE is negotiating with Junts y ERC to achieve the support of its deputies for an investiture of Pedro Sánchez.

Feijóo, however, did not want to respond to journalists about his conversation with Reynders, although he did reveal that they had spoken “about the rule of law” and that “the amnesty is part” of that rule of law. “Reynders’ explanations belong to the conversation between Reynders and myself,” the PP leader has avoided. “Of course, I have talked about the amnesty. How can I not talk about the amnesty. “Eurocrimes such as embezzlement affect the rule of law,” he concluded.

Reynders already warned this October that there are “some European limits” to this possible amnesty law, although he acknowledged that it is a “national competence.”
