Four assistant referees will actively participate for the first time in the history of CONMEBOL Libertadores Sub20 2024, a men’s continental tournament that will be held in Uruguay.

Mary Blanco, assistant referee of Colombia, Nancy Fernández, assistant referee of Paraguay, Migdalia Rodríguez, assistant referee of Venezuela and Guadalupe Porras, UEFA assistant referee, were summoned by the CONMEBOL Referees Commission to be part of the referee shortlists in the competition.

The participation of the European referee occurs within the framework of the exchange program between CONMEBOL and UEFA, whose main objective is the development and growth of refereeing on both continents.

During the 2023 club tournaments of the South American Football Confederation, female referees were appointed 224 times in different roles, such as: main referee; assistant referee; 4th referee; VAR; AVAR; referee advisor and quality manager. A commitment by CONMEBOL for the development and professionalization of more women on and off the playing field.

This is the result of the good work done by the referees in recent years in different competitions and, in part, of the multiple courses and workshops given by the CONMEBOL Referees Commission.

For South American female referees, participating in CONMEBOL men’s club competitions is an opportunity for growth in their career and a relevant factor in their preparation for major world tournaments, in which they best represent South America.

The preparation provided to the referees by the CONMEBOL Referees Commission, such as the different courses, workshops, seminars or the preseason that is carried out annually with the South American refereeing professionals, are the cornerstone of good work within from the field.
