Femicide in Gironde: the victim had filed two complaints, Darmanin calls for an administrative investigation

While a new femicide was unveiled this Saturday morning in the Somme, the investigation into the murder of a woman on Friday in Gironde continues. The facts were linked to Saint-Laurent-d’Arce, about thirty kilometers north of Bordeaux. This 54-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her ex-companion, who then killed himself by hanging, as the Libourne prosecutor’s office announced in the afternoon.

The victim, who felt in danger, had however given the alert twice by filing a complaint against this 62-year-old man in recent weeks. Gérald Darmanin has requested an administrative investigation from the General Inspectorate of the National Gendarmerie (IGGN), AFP learned this Saturday from the Ministry of the Interior.

The couple had been separated since “mid-January” and the woman “had filed a complaint on February 5 and then February 23” at the Saint-André-de-Cubzac gendarmerie for “violence without incapacity” and “dissemination of images infringing on the intimacy of his private life, ”said Libourne prosecutor Olivier Kern in a press release. The man was the subject of “a conditional reduction measure” by the sentence enforcement judge and lived in the town of Montendre (Charente-Maritime), about thirty kilometers from Saint-Laurent d’Arce , with a ban on entering into a relationship with this former companion, added the prosecution.

Recidivist

The femicide victim had met this man shortly after his release from prison. According to France Info, shortly before her death, this woman, knowing that she was threatened, had called her current partner, who had himself contacted the victim’s sister, asking her to come to her home. She found her lifeless. The suspect hanged himself.

The man was released from prison in 2017 after an assassination attempt on his wife at the time. He was then forbidden to appear in Gironde, according to France Bleu, but no particular follow-up would have been put in place. According to the latest figures from the Ministry of the Interior, 122 feminicides took place in 2021, an increase of 20% compared to 2020.
