The men’s sabre fencing team defeated host country France to advance to the final, leaving them just one step away from a three-peat at the Olympics.
The sabre team, consisting of Oh Sang-wook (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), Gu Bon-gil (National Sports Promotion Foundation), Park Sang-won (Daejeon Metropolitan City Hall), and Do Kyung-dong (Armed Forces Athletic Corps), defeated France 45-39 in the semifinals of the men’s sabre team event at the 2024 Paris Olympics held at the Grand Palais in Paris, France on the 31st (local time).
The Korean national team, ranked No. 1 in the world, is considered a strong candidate to win this competition. After the retirement of the original ‘Avengers (Avengers + fencing)’ members Kim Jung-hwan and Kim Jun-ho, Park Sang-won and Do Kyung-dong, who joined the team, showed off their outstanding skills and established themselves as the ‘New Avengers’. Korea won gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in succession. The men’s sabre team event was not held in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Earlier, national team star Oh Sang-wook won the men’s sabre individual event on the 28th, giving Korea its first gold medal in this competition. Oh Sang-wook, the first Korean male sabre athlete to succeed in a gold medal, is aiming for a second gold medal in this competition.
Korea, which has advanced to the final, will face the winner of the Iran-Hungary match. The final will be held at 3:30 a.m. on August 1, Korean time.
