Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal unexpectedly resigned after a Champions League draw with Roma, but club president Aziz Yildirim insisted he would remain in the role, sparking chaos at the club.
Fenerbahce’s head coach, Ismail Kartal, stunned players and fans by resigning immediately after a 1-1 Champions League draw with AS Roma, but club president Aziz Yildirim swiftly denied the departure, claiming Kartal continues in his role.
The turmoil escalated as Dirk Kuijt took charge of training alongside Zeki Gole, according to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu. Kartal’s abrupt exit, announced in a press conference, left the club in disarray, with Yildirim later stating, He remains our coach and I told him that as well. We will continue together, we are like a family.
Kartal’s Shocking Resignation and the Bottle Incident
Kartal’s decision to step down came after a match in Istanbul, where a water bottle was thrown towards his head. The coach cited the incident as a catalyst for his resignation, saying, I have taken this decision to clear the way for my club. We took this decision together as a team,
and adding, never to return.
However, Yildirim disputed this, stating, Until I leave, he will remain the head coach,
and emphasizing their “family” dynamic.
The match itself saw Fenerbahce equalize through Archie Brown’s goal, but the team’s performance has been inconsistent this season. They sit ninth in the Turkish top-flight after losing twice in their opening four games, including a 2-1 home defeat to Besiktas. Despite this, the team reached the Champions League’s league phase this season for the first time in 18 years, though their campaign has been marred by internal strife.
Conflict Between Kartal and Yildirim
The clash between Kartal and Yildirim highlights a rift within the club’s leadership. Kartal, who spent a decade at Fenerbahce as a player and previously coached the club, described his resignation as a team decision, but Yildirim rejected this, asserting his authority. I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it,
the president said, defending Kartal’s role. However, Kartal’s statement that he was leaving “never to return” contradicted Yildirim’s claims, leaving the situation unresolved.
Yildirim also addressed the bottle-throwing incident, stating, Some fans threw a bottle at the coach’s head this evening during the game. He is upset about it.
Turkish media say the person who threw the object has since been arrested. Kartal, who spent a decade at Fenerbahce as a player, coached the club in 2014-15, then on an interim basis in 2021-22 before returning for a full campaign in 2023-24, and returned for another managerial spell in June.
Uncertainty Over Fenerbahce’s Future
With Kartal’s fate unresolved, the club faces a critical period. Assistant coach Kuijt, who has worked as an assistant coach at Fenerbahce since this summer, is temporarily stepping in for Kartal for now, but the lack of clarity has unsettled players and supporters. The team will travel to Aston Villa and host Liverpool in two of their remaining league phase games – whether Kartal will be in charge or not remains to be seen.
Kartal’s departure also raises questions about his plans. He told reporters, I want to thank our supporters, the people in the media, my staff and my players for all the support I have received so far,
and announced his departure with no intention of ever returning in the same role. Yet Yildirim’s insistence that Kartal continues in his role
suggests the conflict is far from over. The club’s next steps will depend on whether Kartal’s resignation is final or a temporary measure.
What Comes Next for Fenerbahce?
The immediate uncertainty surrounding Kartal’s position has left Fenerbahce in a precarious state.
