Pioneering Vascular Surgeon Brings Advanced Aortic Repair to Güstrow Hospital

Güstrow, Germany – The KMG Klinikum Güstrow has achieved a significant milestone in regional medical care with the successful implementation of a novel, minimally invasive procedure for aortic aneurysms. Led by Dr. Safwan Omran, Chief Physician of the Vascular Surgery Clinic, the hospital has become one of the few facilities in the area offering fenestrated aortic stent implantation.

Dr. Omran, who arrived in Güstrow almost exactly one year ago, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. From 2015 to 2024, he served as senior physician and site manager of the Clinic for Vascular Surgery at the prestigious Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and is a prolific author of scientific publications. Upon joining the KMG Klinikum, Dr. Omran articulated his vision: “I plan to further develop aortic surgery and the entire spectrum of vascular surgery at the KMG Klinikum Güstrow.”

A Breakthrough in Aortic Aneurysm Treatment

The newly implemented procedure addresses aortic aneurysms, dangerous bulges in the main artery that, if left untreated, can lead to a life-threatening rupture. The fenestrated aortic stent implantation offers a less invasive alternative to traditional open surgery.

“It is a major advantage over traditional open surgery that the care time in the intensive care unit and the recovery phase can be significantly shortened. In addition, the risk of complications is significantly reduced,” Dr. Omran explained. The technique involves inserting a stent through small incisions in the groin, guided precisely into place using X-ray imaging. This approach minimizes stress on the patient compared to the large abdominal incision required for conventional surgery. The method is also now applicable to complex aneurysms affecting the renal arteries.

Local Access to Cutting-Edge Technology

Prior to his appointment in Güstrow, Dr. Omran regularly performed this demanding procedure at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is now dedicated to making this advanced technology accessible to patients in Güstrow and the surrounding region, eliminating the need for lengthy travel to receive specialized care.

The first patient to benefit from this innovative treatment at the KMG Güstrow was Hans-Joachim Piehl. According to a hospital spokesperson, Franz Christian Meier, “The Güstrower was able to be extubated shortly after the operation and recovered quickly.”

Expanding Vascular Care in the Region

The introduction of this technology positions the KMG Klinikum Güstrow as a regional leader in vascular surgery. Dr. Omran emphasized the collaborative effort that made this achievement possible, stating, “We are pleased that we can offer this highly specialized treatment to our patients in Güstrow. A special thank you goes to my team, whose great commitment made the introduction of this technology possible.”

This advancement promises to significantly improve outcomes and quality of life for patients facing aortic aneurysm diagnoses in the region.
