The Robin des Bois association nicknamed them “the plague victims of Ouessant. For several years, a herd of around 150 wild goats have indeed taken up residence on the small Breton island, best known for its black sheep. But the cohabitation with the inhabitants quickly turned sour, the goats being accused of invading the gardens and nibbling the vegetation.

Faced with this situation that had become unmanageable, the decision was therefore taken to deport them to the continent. On Wednesday, a first convoy thus left the island to join a breeding located in the Monts-d’Arrée (Finistère). However, the transfer by livestock truck and then by boat turned tragic according to Robin Hoodwhich identified “several goats dead by suffocation” on their arrival.

The Robin des Bois association could file a complaint

“The goats were transported with fewer precautions than goods,” deplores the association, which reserves the right to file a complaint. “There are still several dozen goats on the island of Ouessant,” she continues. It is essential that a pause be declared in their transfer and that broad consultation be deployed to ensure their future. Contacted by several local media, the mayor of Ouessant said he had not been informed of the death of the animals.

The shipping company Penn Ar Bed, which ensured the transfer of the livestock carrier from the island to the mainland, ensures for its part that it is in no way responsible in this affair. “We did not know the number of animals that were inside (…) or how long the animals had been inside,” defended the management. in the columns of West France.
