Lime. Regarding the processes of construction of strategic plan tools for the sustainable development of the Amazon, “consider indigenous peoples as partners and not beneficiaries.” This was expressed by Fermín Chimatani, from the National Association of Communal Reserve Administration Contract Executors of Peru (Anecap), and who leads the Peru group of Indigenous Peoples, of the GCF Task Force, during the launch of the IV Congress of Amazon Entrepreneurs – CEA 2023.

“For this we have to generate the enabling conditions so that the dialogue and the construction and implementation of this vision that we set out to be of full and effective participation,” added Chimanati, highlighting the importance of the contribution of native communities in the implementation of initiatives such as the mentioned congress.

As recalled, the IV Congress of Amazon Entrepreneurs -CEA 2023 will have the participation of more than 300 businessmen, authorities, academics and native communities that are committed to the sustainable development of the Amazon within a green economy in the country. The event will take place on June 8 and 9 at the “Sombrero de Paja” hotel in the city of Iquitos.

The agenda of indigenous communities

Chimanati remarked that it should be taken into account that the native peoples have their own agenda for sustainable development and that it is necessary that other sectors pay attention to it. He cited that to join efforts “we are open to dialogue, we are willing to join”, ruling out any charitable approach towards them.

“Indigenous peoples have our own agenda. We have initiatives such as social enterprises that are being developed in the case of communal reserves that manage part of the ancestral territory established as protected areas, indigenous cooperatives, and indigenous women’s initiatives,” she stressed.
Within this agenda, he added that, from the indigenous peoples, and jointly with other Amazonian entities, they are implementing issues related to Amazonian Indigenous REDD+. He cited that there are “key pillars” that are raised as the issue of the indigenous economy or governance.

Finally, he thanked the opportunity to be able to participate in the launch of the IV CEA 2023 “where we are to participate as partners and not as beneficiaries in this process to generate well-being and build a sustainable future for our Amazon where we have been living for hundreds of years.”
