Fernando Alonso will remain at Aston Martin. The two-time Formula 1 world champion is not moving to Mercedes or Red Bull Racing, but will also drive for Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll’s racing team in 2026. “For me, Aston was the logical decision,” said the 42-year-old Spaniard. “All other conversations were superficial and never produced any results. At Aston, the desire to work together was clear, just as it was with me.”
Fernando Alonso signed the longest contract of his career
It is not known for how long Fernando Alonso will be tied to Aston Martin with the new contract signing. But one thing is clear: there will be many years that he may not spend all of them in the cockpit. “This is the longest contract I have ever signed in my career, so it will keep me with Aston for many, many years to come,” said the Spaniard. “Let’s see what role I’ll play, let’s see how many more years I’ll be driving. But even after driving, I will use more than 25 years of experience in Formula 1 and another 10 or 15 outside of Formula 1, so almost 40 years of experience. I’m extremely motivated.”
Alonso will celebrate his 45th birthday on July 29, 2026, and he will continue to be active as a driver in Formula 1 for that long – at least. The Spaniard took over the cockpit at Aston Martin from Sebastian Vettel in 2023 after his retirement.
Eventful Formula 1 career
Fernando Alonso drove his first Formula 1 race for Minardi in 2001. In 2005 he became world champion with Renault – at the age of 24, he was the youngest title winner to date. He also finished the following season at the top of the drivers’ standings. At the end of 2018, the Spaniard ended his Formula 1 career and turned to other disciplines before returning to the premier class of motorsport in 2021.
