Fernando Gaviria fell short of medal contention in the Omnium event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Colombian cyclist, who had withdrawn from the Tour de France to focus on the Games, struggled in all four tests and finished 17th overall.
His first test, the scratch, saw him finish 20th out of 22 riders, trailing the Frenchman Benjamin Thomas, who won the event with 40 points. Two other riders, Ricardo Peña Salas and Youssef Abouelhasan, also lost multiple laps. Gaviria managed to score only two points.
The time trial was Gaviria’s second event, and he started in third position. However, he failed to score any points in the sprint and finished 14th 60 points behind the leader. In the elimination race, he fared slightly better, finishing eighth and earning 26 points.
In the points race, Gaviria did not score any points in the sprints and finished 16th. His overall score of 42 points placed him 17th in the final standings. The gold medal went to Benjamin Thomas, while Iuri Leitao and Fabio van den Bossche took silver and bronze, respectively.
