Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau has revolutionized the month of June. After presenting ‘The First Victory’ in Cangas de Onís, the painter of battles opens the doors of a new exhibition this Tuesday June 13 in Madrid: ‘Sketches for history’. A name that, as María Fidalgo, a doctor in art history, explains to ABC, does not do the show justice: “He calls them sketches, but they are perfectly finished works in oil.” In the words of which she is also an adviser to the author, “he calls them that because they are figures with which he exercises to later use them in larger paintings, but they would be the envy of any other author.”

According to Fidalgo, this exhibition is a milestone in the world of historical art: «Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau had not exhibited in Madrid for seven years because all the work he has done has been commissioned; he has a lot of them and he can’t keep up. This sample is a unique opportunity to enjoy a great panoply of his originals ». For this reason, he invites the public to go to the Carlos de Amberes Foundation –at Claudio Coello street, nº 99– between June 13 and 18. “You’d better hurry because, later, between the 19th and the 25th, the exhibition will move to the Real Círculo de Labradores in Seville,” he says.

The exhibition is made up of 25 sketches that cover major events in the history of Spain. From the construction of a galleon in dry dock, to the Civil War or the fighting of the Blue Division in the Soviet Union. All this, without forgetting the horses, the figurehead of the painter of battles for decades. «They are unpublished, although many will sound like his followers. And it makes sense. When he poses a painting, he draws an infinity of figures for the composition. Those that do not have a place on canvas, he finishes them in oil, either in color or in black and white », says Fidalgo.

And it is precisely the latter that the painter presents in society these days. «Very few painters finish their ‘sketches’ in oil. It is something very technically complex because he can only play with three colors: white, black and gray », adds the expert. As a climax, Fidalgo reveals a scoop: “Those who attend will be able to see figures that he will include in future paintings.” The key, he says, is that this exhibition “is a unique opportunity to understand the creative process” of what is currently one of the ‘top’ painters on the Spanish scene. We do not resist one last question: What is his favorite? And he does not doubt: «The one with the battle of San Martial I love it”.
