Ferry line connecting Manhattan to Staten Island to add new vessel for the first time in 16 years

by time news

The ferry line connecting Manhattan to Staten Island will soon feature a new vessel for the first time in 16 years. It bears the name of Sergeant Michael Ollis, a Staten Island native, a US Army ranger who died in Afghanistan in 2013 while rescuing a comrade in arms.

His father, Robert Ollis, said during the launching ceremony: “I want Michael’s name to remain in the memory of people forever.”

Department of Transportation Commissioner Hank Gutman noted that passengers will see some improvements on the new ferry: more comfortable seats, an oval-shaped promenade deck, which provides an impressive view of New York Harbor while sailing.

The new vessel will be launched by the end of this year. Two more of the same type are currently under construction in Florida.
