The news came out yesterday that thousands are being treated for viral fever and asthma-like symptoms in the state. Health experts have stated that various viruses such as influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus are behind this. ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) is clarifying that H3N2 virus, a subtype of influenza A, is behind the frequent fever and cough.

ICMR states that the H3N2 virus has been spreading for the past two to three months and hospitalizations related to it are increasing. ICMR officials also stated that it is expected that the spread of the disease will decrease by the end of March or the beginning of April.

According to ICMR data, 92 percent of those infected with H3N2 experienced fever, 86 percent cough, 27 percent shortness of breath and 16 percent wheezing. Apart from this, 16 percent of the patients reported pneumonia and 6 percent reported whirlwind. Officials state that 10 percent of those who arrive at the hospital with severe respiratory problems require oxygen assistance and 7 percent require ICU services.

According to the report of the World Health Organization, seasonal influenza is behind 3 to 5 million disease-related deaths and 2.9 to 6.5 million deaths from respiratory diseases every year. The World Health Organization says that vaccination is the main way to prevent disease.

In addition to vaccination and antiviral treatment, the World Health Organization recommends personal hygiene, covering the face when coughing and sneezing, staying in isolation if infected, and avoiding contact with others if symptoms begin.
