The number of people with the flu was lower last week than in the week before. Per 100,000 inhabitants, 65 inhabitants visited the GP because of flu-like complaints, according to figures from the Nivel research institute. A week earlier, there were still 103 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The number of GP visits due to flu-like symptoms fell mainly in the age groups 5-14 years, 15-44 years and 45-64 years.
The flu virus was found in 37 percent of the 41 throat and nose samples taken from people who reported to their GP with flu-like symptoms.
Epidemic
This does not mean that the flu epidemic is over. There is an epidemic if more than 58 per 100,000 inhabitants go to their GP with flu-like symptoms for two weeks in a row and at least 10 percent of these people have the flu virus. The current epidemic started just before Christmas.
According to Nivel researcher Mariëtte Hooiveld, it is still too early to say that the epidemic is on its way out. He may revive again. Given the numbers, the intensity of the epidemic is still low.
