Feyenoord has imposed direct stadium bans on 47 supporters following a disturbance during an away match against SC Cambuur on August 23.
The Matchday Disturbance and Injuries
The trouble erupted in the twelfth minute of the fixture in Leeuwarden, a match that ultimately ended in a 2-5 victory for the visiting side. Supporters stationed in the Feyenoord away section ignited and launched a large volume of pyrotechnics directly toward the pitch and into surrounding grandstands occupied by SC Cambuur fans. During SC Cambuur – Feyenoord on August 23, fireworks were set off on a large scale in the away section, and multiple supporters of SC Cambuur were injured in the process.
Seven home supporters sustained injuries during the barrage, suffering from burns, eye damage, and hearing loss. One victim, a 41-year-old man, sustained permanent hearing damage as a result of the explosions in the stands. Following the chaos, the match was temporarily halted after 12 minutes when fireworks were set off on a large scale from the Feyenoord section. SC Cambuur general director Jesse Bergsma previously called the severity of the injuries “unacceptable” and “terrible.”
Sanctions and Identification Process
Following an intensive, week-long review of video footage by club investigators who studied image material over the past weeks, Feyenoord took swift administrative action against those identified in the crowd disorder. The Rotterdam club issued local stadium bans for De Kuip to 47 individuals immediately, blocked their away cards, and formally submitted the names to the KNVB to pursue nationwide stadium bans. Feyenoord has no influence on that procedure.
The disciplinary measures target more than just the individuals who physically lit the fireworks. According to club findings, the stadium bans are imposed for various reasons, including individuals involved in coordinating the fireworks action, holding up banners, intentionally staying out of camera view by standing under a banner, or actually setting off fireworks. Feyenoord’s leadership also condemned the fact that various supporters suddenly wore balaclavas during the fireworks incident, noting that wearing such face-covering clothing in the stands is prohibited under the applicable KNVB standard terms and conditions.
Feyenoord leadership also took immediate proactive steps by deciding not to take away fans to the matches against NEC in Nijmegen and PEC Zwolle. Because that large-scale investigation has still not been completed, Feyenoord’s leadership expects more individuals to be identified in the coming days. Feyenoord had already strongly distanced themselves from the events on Sunday evening and described them as unacceptable events,
while the club has now got various perpetrators in their sights.
Criminal Investigations and Legal Consequences
Beyond civil penalties issued by the club, a criminal prosecution also belongs to the possibilities. SC Cambuur has meanwhile officially filed a criminal complaint regarding the incidents, while the Public Prosecution Service has initiated an inquiry. The police are currently still busy analyzing the footage to link specific criminal offenses to individuals, meaning that no arrests have been made to date.
When additional measures regarding a nationwide stadium ban follow from criminal proceedings, those are determined by the KNVB. The football bond is informed in that case by the Public Prosecution Service.
Leadership Condemnation and Government Response
Club executives expressed stark condemnation of the events in Leeuwarden, characterizing the behavior of the visiting contingent in severe terms. Feyenoord general director Robert Eenhoorn described the events as “worthless” and simply terrible.

The fallout from the Cambuur match and recent incidents in Utrecht galvanized national authorities into action. Following consultation between the football association with the Public Prosecution Service, the police, Minister David van Weel of Justice and Security, and Mayor Depla of Breda acting on behalf of all mayors with professional football organizations in their municipalities, new measures were established.
The Ministry of Justice and Security stated via NOS that recent incidents in Leeuwarden and Utrecht underscored the need to join forces against serious and deliberate security incidents surrounding football matches, adding that it was disgraceful for a small group of stadium visitors to misbehave in such a manner and ruin it for the other attendees.
Stricter Protocols and Nationwide Policy Shifts
The protocols of the KNVB are being further tightened in response to this incident. Moving forward, matches will be halted immediately at the very first instance that fireworks are thrown or shot toward the field or stands.
Simultaneously, the police and the Public Prosecution Service will more intensively track down and prosecute the violent and criminal part of hard cores and ultra groups, as written by the Ministry of Justice and Security.
