The FIFA has relaxed the rules on stadiums Facing the 2034 World Cupa measure that seems designed so that Saudi Arabia Win the contest to become the tournament host.

Until now, applicants had to propose a minimum of 14 suitable stadiums, of which at least seven had to be existing stadiums. A requirement, in line with other types of large sporting events, designed to create more sustainable and ecological events, avoiding the construction of large centers without subsequent continuity.

However, the requirements to host in 2034, distributed on Thursday by FIFA, have been relaxed. “Of the 14 suitable stadiums proposed, any offer must propose a minimum of four existing stadiums,” states the document of the organization that presides. Gianni Infantino.

FIFA has announced that it wants to allocate the 2034 tournament to bids from Asia and Oceania, following its continental rotation policy. Saudi Arabia, immersed in a policy of diplomatic expansion globally through sport, has already announced its intention to host that year’s World Cup. Australia considers whether to present a candidacy. The registration period ends on October 31, which goes against other countries preparing their proposal in advance.

The Olympic contrast

For FIFA, an adequate stadium must have a minimum capacity of 40,000 spectators and, in the most relevant matches, final and semi-final types, the space must be able to accommodate 60,000 and 80,000 spectators.

Saudi Arabia will host the 2027 Asian Cup and in its reports, as explained by The Guardian, it included four stadiums with capacity for 40,000 spectators or more: two in Riyadh, which are being modernized, one in Jeddah and a new one in Dammam. Construction of the Dammam stadium began last month.

A FIFA spokesperson noted that “the tender rules require FIFA to use the 2030 requirements as a basis and adapt them if appropriate and applicable to fit its purpose.”

By contrast, the International Olympic Committee has encouraged the use of existing facilities by Olympic hosts. It states that 95% of Paris 2024 venues will be pre-existing facilities (including some renovated and modernized) or temporary structures.
