Gérald Darmanin will receive representatives of Jewish institutions

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced that he would receive at 3 p.m. the chief rabbi of France, Haïm Korsia, the president of the CRIF, Yonathan Arfi, and the president of the central consistory, Elie Korchia, to discuss the situation after the surprise offensive by Hamas from Gaza against Israel.

On Saturday, the Minister of the Interior asked the prefects of France to strengthen the security of Jewish community places, with the visible and static presence of law enforcement in front of places of worship, and the reinforcement of municipal police and soldiers of Operation “Sentinel”. The Jewish community celebrates several holidays since the start of the Jewish new year in mid-September.

Mr. Darmanin, who held a meeting on Sunday morning with all of his services, repeated “that today there is no clear threat that would affect our Jewish compatriots on national territory”. However, he mentioned several anti-Semitic acts during the weekend in France. “We saw this weekend around ten anti-Semitic acts, tags, telephone threats, people coming in front of places of worship, for example”he reported, specifying that there was “lots of arrests”. The minister reported “around 700 reports on Pharos”the platform for reporting violent or illicit content circulating on the Internet. “These reports to Pharos are open legal investigations”he added.

Mr. Darmanin also justified the ban on the holding of a pro-Palestinian rally, planned for Monday evening in Lyon. “The demonstration took place in the already difficult Guillotière district (…) and those who organized the demonstration are very unfavorably known”. The CRIF, for its part, called for a rally on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Place d’Italie in Paris.
