Phase-by-Phase Breakdown of the 2026 Format
Both the men’s and women’s competitions feature 16 teams divided into four pools of four sides each—designated as Pools A, B, C, and D. During Phase 1 from August 15 to 20, every team plays three matches against opponents in its respective pool to determine standings from first to fourth.
Phase 2 runs from August 21 to 24, regrouping teams into four new crossover pools based on their initial group finishes:
- Pool E: 1st and 2nd place finishers from Pools A and D
- Pool F: 1st and 2nd place finishers from Pools B and C
- Pool G: 3rd and 4th place finishers from Pools A and D
- Pool H: 3rd and 4th place finishers from Pools B and C
Teams play three additional matches against opponents they did not face in the opening phase. Crucially, a team’s result from its Phase-1 match against the other advancing team from its original pool carries forward into Phase 2.
Semi-Finals, Classification Matches, and Medal Schedules
Phase 3 takes place from August 27 to 28. Standings from Pools E, F, G, and H dictate the classification matches to determine final positions from fifth to 16th. Meanwhile, the top two teams from Pool E and Pool F advance directly to the semi-finals under the following matchups:
