This Friday, July 19, 2024, Wilman Terán, former president of the Judicial Council, arrived at the National Court from La Roca prison in Guayaquil for the preparatory hearing of the Judicial Independence case.

Terán, dressed in a suit, tried to interrupt the proceedings before his return and took the opportunity to report that, in the early hours of the same day, he suffered an attempted attack in the prison, where military personnel used gas bombs.

The former president of the Judiciary reiterated his demand to file a writ of habeas corpus before the hearing resumed for alleged obstruction of justice.

Wilman Terán, former president of the Judicial Council (CJ) and one of the 13 defendants in the aforementioned case, argued that he cannot defend himself via telematics from prison The Rockin Guayaquil, where he has been held since December 2023.

This is the second trip to Quito that Terán has made this week. The first was on Wednesday, May 17, 2024, because he requested to appear in person at the Plenary Session of the National Assembly (AN) to exercise his right to defense in the impeachment trial for breach of duty, promoted by the Construye movement, from which he emerged unscathed thanks to the fact that the 47 legislators of the Citizen Revolution (RC5) bench abstained from voting for the motion of censure.

In addition to Terán, the 13 defendants include Ruth Barreno and Xavier Muñoz, former members of the Judiciary. The latter, after admitting his guilt, submitted to an abbreviated procedure and was sentenced to a reduced sentence of nine months in prison.
