Holiday allowance of ‘1.5 times the regular wage’ is provided and work is possible through consultation
Setting the table for ancestral rites, grilling fish, etc. are not allowed… Some tasks such as washing dishes are ‘ambiguous’
The ‘Filipino housekeeper’ who started working in Seoul in early September can work even during the Chuseok holiday if there is agreement with the family using the service.
The main job of a foreign housekeeper is childcare, but they may also be responsible for some childcare-related household chores.
However, some point out that the scope of work is ambiguous because it is difficult to clearly distinguish between childcare and non-childcare work in households with children.
According to Seoul City on the 16th, Filipino housekeepers can come to work during the Chuseok holiday from the 16th to the 18th, in consultation with the families that employ them.
Instead, they give holiday work allowances that are 1.5 times the regular wage. Based on hourly wages, this amounts to 25,500 won per hour.
Foreign housekeepers are not allowed to do any ancestral rites shopping, as their primary role is to take care of children. They are also not allowed to take out the trash, mop the floor, or organize the storage.
In the home, workers are not allowed to cook or fry food. According to Seoul City’s work guidelines, workers are not allowed to cook food using open fire.
In some childcare-related household tasks, the scope of work is unclear. Current guidelines state that washing adult dishes is not allowed in principle, but is allowed if mixed with children’s dishes.
Also, adult clothes cannot be washed, but children’s clothes can be washed together if they are included.
You cannot cook for your family members who live with you, but you can heat food for them when they eat the same diet as your child.
Kim, a 40-something office worker with a 5-year-old child, said, “It is not easy to clearly distinguish between childcare and non-childcare work in a household with a child,” adding, “Even if there is work agreed upon between the worker and the family in the contract, the scope is ambiguous, so they have to do multiple things, and (the housekeeper) may have to watch what others think and take on some work that they have no choice but to do.”
Regarding this, a Seoul city official said, “There are not many domestic workers working during this holiday,” and “There have been no complaints regarding the scope of work so far.”
Meanwhile, the number of households using Philippine housekeeping services, which was 143 as of the 3rd of this month, increased to over 160 through additional permanent applications.
