died yesterday in Rome, aged 84, Philip Ottonidirector, screenwriter and dubbing director: during his career, he had translated or adapted over 200 movies (from works by Clint Eastwood to Tim Burton or Emir Kusturica) and to him we owe, among other things, the Italian versions of important titles such as Balla sui lupi, Carlito’s Way, Mystic river or Star Wars: Episode I.

Born in the province of Viterbo in 1938, Ottoni graduated from the International Film School in London and he had directed five films including Police asylum, from 1988 and I giorni randagi, from 1995. Married to his colleague Elettra Bisetti, he had also led the Italian Association of Film Adapter Dialogists. For the theater, however, he had translated works by Pinter, Ayckburn, Frayn and, from French, Ozon and Veber, also signing some of his comedies.

Among the various awards received, state candidate for the Davids by Donatello 1993 (shared with Roberto Faenza) for the screenplay of Jona who lived in the whale, awarded for Best dubbing at the Voci nell’Ombra Festival and received the Golden Leggio for Lifetime Achievement in 2004. The funeral will be held on Wednesday 10 May at 12 at the Church of the artists in Piazza del Popolo in Rome.
