23 films are competing for the Golden Lion in Venice this year, including the work of a young German director. “The Theory of Everything” is only the second feature film by Timm Kröger.

The young German director Timm Kröger is fighting for the Golden Lion in this year’s Venice Film Festival competition. This was announced at the Venice Festival. “The Theory of Everything” is one of those 23 entries in the competition. Hanns Zischler (“Munich”), Jan Bülow (“Lindenberg! Do your thing”) and Olivia Ross (“Knightfall”) play the leading roles.

It is a film noir in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, for example, said the film agency in charge. It is Kröger’s second feature film. The filmmaker was born in Itzehoe in 1985.

The Venice Film Festival runs from August 30th to September 9th. Some German actors have been announced for the festival. Franz Rogowski plays the leading role in Giorgio Diritti’s competition entry “Lubo”. Clemens Schick can be seen in the competition film “Dogman” by Luc Besson.

Premiere of the new Polanski film

Oliver Masucci and Milan Peschel have roles in Roman Polanski’s new film, The Palace, which is out of competition. The US judiciary has been investigating the Polish-French director for a sexual offense for more than 40 years. Polanski’s previous film also premiered in Venice and received an award there.

The strike by US screenwriters and actors does not appear to have had a major impact on the competition. With the new films by Sofia Coppola, David Fincher and Bradley Cooper, top-class US filmmakers compete for the main prize. Works by well-known US directors Richard Linklater and Harmony Korine can also be seen out of competition.

Change of opening film

Recently, however, it became known that the planned opening film “Challengers” by Luca Guadagnino with Hollywood star Zendaya cannot be shown due to the strike. The theatrical release of the film was postponed. Instead, the festival will now start with the film “Comandante” by Italian director Edoardo De Angelis.

The festival’s line-up has announced many stars who are members of the striking actors’ union SAG-AFTRA. It is currently unclear whether they can come to Italy on the red carpet. These include Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Adam Driver, Willem Dafoe, Carey Mulligan and Maya Hawke.

Out of competition The new film by controversial US director Woody Allen, “Coup de Chance”, is also showing. And a short film by Wes Anderson, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” stars Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Kingsley. (dpa)
