The 77th Cannes Film Festival begins next week. Many celebrities will stay at the Carlton Hotel – where exactly 70 years ago Hitchcock made his most sensual film. “Over the Rooftops of Nice” changed everything: film history, the Côte d’Azur and the lives of its stars.

You can literally smell the sunscreen through the screen and feel the wind of the French Riviera on your skin. “To Catch a Thief,” which in German has the much more charming title “Over the Roofs of Nice,” may not be the most exciting Hitchcock film, but it is definitely the most sensual. The scenes in which Cary Grant and Grace Kelly look at each other in love on the Croisette, splash in the crystal blue water and speed along the coastal roads in an open convertible rightly won Robert Burks the Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1956.

However, many scenes were not filmed in Nice, but in Cannes, for example in the legendary Carlton Hotel or in the Château de la Croix des Gardes. The big names in the film industry are meeting in Cannes again this week for the 77th Film Festival. Many of them will stay at the Carlton and possibly spend the night in the Grace Kelly or Hitchcock Suite named after the classic film.

If they are so old-fashioned and wear jewels, when Kelly as Frances Stevens signaled a change in trend with her iconic statement that she didn’t like cold things touching her skin, then they are advised to at least hide them well. Because in the thriller a thief is up to mischief who gets in through the window and makes jewelry disappear. Suspected of the crimes, jewel thief John Robie (Grant), who has actually retired from the racketeering business, has no other chance than to catch the real thief in order to save his own reputation.

During the Cannes premiere in 1955, Kelly found two great loves in real life: Prince Rainier III. of Monaco, whom she married shortly afterwards and who became the father of her three children. And the one to the Côte d’Azur, which she never left until her death. However, this love drama also came to a tragic end: After Frances survived unscathed her adventurous car journeys, which we follow breathlessly in “Over the Roofs of Nice,” the princess died in a traffic accident on the Riviera at the age of just 52.

Anyone wondering whether this year’s festival will offer a film with similarly fantastic rooftop walks in the evening light as in 1955 can look forward to Francis Ford Coppola’s science fiction monumental work “Megalopolis” set in New York. At least in the trailer, Adam Driver, the Cary Grant of our time, stands at a dizzying height on the edge and looks down at the city that lies at his feet. And although he seems to be able to stop time from one second to the next, we notice in this scene alone how much time has passed since Grant’s confident leaps to heights: the present-day hero is plagued by doubts, he trembles, he is afraid.
