Gabriel Vidal, former student of the Filmworks of the International Film Academy (AIC), had his film “Uma Foto a Dia” selected for the festivals Filmaê – Brasilia Mobile Film Festival 2023 e Short Way International Short Film Festival. The film is the result of a film-essay exercise carried out by the students independently.

Gabriel’s journey on this project has been a long one. He was given the exercise in 2020, before the pandemic, and initially planned to tackle the topic of music. However, with the lockdown, he suspended the course and, in order not to miss out on learning, he decided to improve his photographic eye. Every day he captured an image on his cell phone, after two years he had extensive material.

From then on, when I returned to AIC I found myself wanting select them and write comments over them. Through the free and creative process we were encouraged to follow, I created more videos and materials based on the search for some specific photos that I missed. I was even lucky enough to film my grandmother improvising a poem, which she gave the film the soul that was missing”, explained Gabriel.

“Uma Foto por Dia” has already been screened at the 3rd Filmaê – Festival de Cinema Móvel de Brasília 2023. In addition, it was selected for the Short Way International Short Film Festival, which will have a live screening at the Cine Satyros Bijou in Sao Paulo.

Gabriel highlights the importance of these festivals, especially Filmaê, which is focused on films made with smartphones. “AWatching the creativity of films and seeing the whole revolution that is being made to have a high-resolution camera in the pocket of filmmakers, the ease and issues that this brings, is incredible”.

With the second film selected for the Festival, the first being “Opus 73”, he highlights the opportunity to participate in festivals with class exercises, encouraging other students to dedicate themselves to smaller projects that can also achieve recognition in circuits and festivals.

“The course provides many opportunities to develop a voice and make it heard beyond the main projects, and to dedicate care and attention to all projects, no matter how simple they are”, comments Gabriel Vidal.
