On July 5th, shortly before midnight, the crew of the Special Preparedness Department of the Šiauliai County Police assisting their colleagues in the Raseiniai District, after hearing the report that a person was drowning in the Sujainiai Pond, was the first to arrive at the scene. The drowning man’s cry for help was heard in the darkness, and the light of the searchlight caught a man 50 meters away in the water.
Since it was impossible to drop the lifebuoy at such a distance, specialist Andrius Karpas threw off his police equipment and clothes and, grabbing the lifebuoy brought to the pond by the fireman who arrived later, decided to dive into the water, even though he does not have the skills to rescue drowning people. It was necessary to act as quickly as possible, because it was no longer minutes, but seconds that mattered.
The rope tied to the wheel was too short for the wheel to reach the drowning man, but Andrius floated the wheel to him and brought the man who cried for help to the shore. He was conscious but clearly intoxicated.
Daivaras Skripkus, a specialist who was with him at the scene, used a searchlight to pick through the darkness throughout the rescue, showing the way to the drowning man and back. The rescued person was handed over to firefighters and medics.
The successful rescue operation in the service of Andrias Karpa and Daivar Skripkaus is not the only one. On October 2 last year, when some colleagues celebrated their professional holiday – Police Day, they and other colleagues did not have a day off and carried out the officer’s daily mission “Defend. Save. Help.” On that day, the life of an 84-year-old woman who went out to mushroom in the marshy forest of Räkyva and got lost was in danger.
The elderly woman asked the authorities for help around 6:00 p.m., when dusk began to fall in the evening in the forest. The woman said that when she reached the peatland, she was completely confused and didn’t know where to go – on one side there was a peatland, on the other – a forest with deep and watery ditches, where her life was in danger.
The already mentioned specialists of the Special Preparedness Department – Daivaras Skripkus and Andrius Karpas, as well as three other officers, crawled into the swampy forest to rescue the woman. With the help of a drone, the officers were able to determine the location of the elderly woman, who was about three kilometers away from the main road.
With the help of the officers, the woman was taken through a deep ditch with water and escorted to the official car left at the edge of the peat bog. The most important thing is that not only the woman’s life was saved, but also the very important catch of the trip – a bucket of mushrooms.
But the officers were in for another adrenaline rush – they soon needed help themselves when their car got stuck while driving off-road. The woman was then intercepted by another police car arriving at the scene, and a tractor from a peat company was needed to extricate the stuck officers’ car.
