Final Fantasy XIV Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026

Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy XIV will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026.

The announcement comes as part of a broader strategy to expand the MMORPG’s reach. According to express.co.uk, the game will require an upfront purchase, mirroring the pricing structure on other platforms. To maintain server stability during the initial rollout, Square Enix will provide an approximately one-month free subscription period for Switch 2 users.

For those already embedded in the ecosystem, the transition is incentivized. Gematsu reports that users with active subscriptions on other platforms can receive a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 subscription fee. Notably, the game will not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play.

Switch 2 Pricing and Technical Specifications

Pre-orders are currently live on the Nintendo eShop. While the base Starter Edition is available, players can opt for more comprehensive bundles. Price listings include the Complete Edition at a pre-order price and a regular price, and the Complete Collector’s Edition. The Dawntrail expansion is also available, with a Collector’s Edition also priced.

The technical footprint for the portable version is significant. The reported download size is 117GB, a detail that may force players to manage their storage if they also have other heavy titles installed.

Complete Edition $41.99
Complete Collector’s Edition $97.99 $139.99

Evercold: The Godless Realms Saga and the Bastion Job

Looking toward January 2027, the Evercold expansion will move the narrative into the Godless Realms Saga. The story takes place on a planet similar to our own with a formal name yet to be revealed, where giants roam in an eternal winter, according to MMORPG.com. This world, known as the Fourth, is ravaged by ice, forcing survivors to live atop massive airships called Realmships or The Five Firmaments.

The expansion introduces the Bastion, a new main tank job. The Bastion utilizes a pair of shape-changing greatshields known as skyltborg, which function as aetherial artillery. Nova Crystallis notes that the Bastion will exclusively use “Evolved Mode” for its actions.

Square Enix is also implementing a structural shift in how players experience the story. To prevent progression bottlenecks, Auto Content Balancing will scale enemy levels to the player’s current level regardless of the order in which dungeons are tackled.

Crossovers: Final Fantasy VII Remake and Evangelion

The Berlin keynote highlighted a deep collaboration between the FF14 and FF7 Remake teams. The result is Beyond the Lifestream, an 8-player raid series.

Initial prizes for the game include outfits for Barret and Tifa.

Meanwhile, the Evangelion-themed alliance raid series, Ghosts of Desire, is gaining a new creative collaborator. Mahiro Maeda, known for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and EVANGELION:3.0 +1.0 THRICE UPON A TIME (2021), has joined the project as a special guest artist and designer.

System Overhauls and Hardware Transitions

Beyond the new content, Square Enix is refining core systems.

However, the expansion of the game’s reach comes with a sunset for older hardware. Gematsu reports that Square Enix expects PlayStation 4 support to end after Patch 8.3, estimated to arrive in roughly two years, as the hardware nears its physical capacity to contain the game.

The pivot to the Switch 2, combined with the aggressive push into the Godless Realms Saga, suggests a strategic effort to refresh the player base just as the PS4 era concludes. By integrating non-linear narrative choices and high-profile crossovers, Square Enix is attempting to modernize the MMORPG’s pacing and accessibility for a new generation of hardware.
