The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the ultimate question is whether Jallikattu can be allowed in any form.

In 2014, when the Supreme Court had banned the use of animals in Jallikattu and bullock cart competitions, various petitions were filed in the Supreme Court against the amendment law brought in Tamil Nadu to conduct Jallikattu.

In 2018, the two-judge bench that heard these petitions recommended a five-judge constitutional bench to investigate the matter.

Judge K.M. Joseph led by Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, C.T. Before the Constitution Session, which included Justices Ravi Kumar, it came up for hearing on Wednesday.

The lawyers appearing for the petitioners argued that cruelty to animals cannot be allowed.

After listening to the various arguments of the lawyers, the judges said, ‘The final question arises as to whether jallikattu competition can be allowed to be held in any form’. The trial of this case will continue on Thursday (Dec. 1).

Earlier, Nov. When the case came up for trial on the 24th, Jallikattu, a religious and cultural contest, had religious significance. In a written reply, the Tamil Nadu government had stated that Jallikattu did not violate the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
