In two weeks, the members of the National Council of the Bar Association will choose who will head the bar until the elections in June. The elections for a new head of the bureau are now taking place, and in a limited format for the members of the National Council only, due to the resignation of the previous head of the bureau Avi Hymi. The list of candidates has been published and includes the following names (in alphabetical order): Ilan Bombach, Amit Bachar, Avraham Lalom and Anat Kaufman.

According to sources in the National Council of the Bar Association who spoke to ‘Maariv’, the two candidates with the greatest chance of being elected now are Amit Bachar and Abraham Lalom. However, it should be remembered that the elections will only take place in about two weeks. Amit Bachar is identified with a firm opposition to the legal reform of Yariv Levin and with the “Black Robes Struggle”. However, Bacher objected to the dismissal of Yitzchak Netovitz from the position of Deputy Head of the Bar Association after he objected to Hymi’s statements against the reform.
Lalom was one of the first lawyers who demanded from Avi Himi not to attack the politicians on the right and the legal reform in his hat as head of the bar, this is because there are lawyers who hold different political views and the head of the bar must respect all of them. In addition, Lalum pledged that if he is now elected as the head of the chamber, he will not run for the headship in the elections in June, this is to make it clear that his actions during his tenure until the elections are not influenced by political considerations aimed at his victory in the next round as well.

According to sources in the bureau, until Becher’s decision to join the race, the leading candidates were Bombach and Lalum. Now, Bacher has gathered wide support, mainly among the opponents of the legal reform who support him on the background of his activity in the struggle of the black robes. Now, the fight between Bacher and Lalom is very close. As a reminder, after Ayala Hasson’s publication according to which the head of the Bar Association, Avi Hami, behaved inappropriately in front of a lawyer who asked him for a recommendation, Hami resigned from the head of the bar.
Now the national council has to choose a new bureau chief, who will serve until the regular general elections in June. If the map of the camps in the National Council of the Bar does not change in the next two weeks, the next head of the bar will be one of two: Amit Bacher or Avraham Lalum.
