The European championships follow each other and are not alike for Denmark. Vice-champions of Europe in the last edition in 2017, the Danes do not go beyond the group stage this year after their defeat conceded at the end of the match (0-1) against Spain, Saturday July 16. The Scandinavian formation finished behind their evening opponent, and Germany, first in the group without discussion after their victory against Finland (3-0).

Denmark will not really be able to harbor any regrets. In the Brentford Community Stadium, there has long been only one team on the meadow. 67% possession, four times more successful passes… Spain largely dominated the debates. La Roja will only have lacked a little more success in front of goal. The absence of the Ballon d’Or Alexia Putellas may be felt in the last 30 opposing meters, the Spaniards have hardly ever been put in danger. It finally took until the 90th minute to see the incoming Marta Cardona score the only goal of the game with a well-placed header.

Pernille Harder’s Danes have once again stretched their offensive limits, despite the talent of the Chelsea player. Combative but dominated in all sectors, the reigning European vice-champions have scored only one goal in three games. Impossible then to hope for a better outcome than a premature elimination.

The Spaniards will have to be more efficient to hope to continue their journey a little more in the competition. The host country, England, awaits them in the quarter-finals. The challenge will be daunting against the most convincing team of this first phase, author of a perfect record (three wins in three games, 14 goals scored, none conceded).

In the other game of the evening in Group B, Germany continued their flawless start to the Euro with a quiet victory against Finland (3-0). The Germans pounded the opposing goal (32 shots!) but had to wait until the 40th minute to break the Finnish lock, before unrolling. Like England, the Nationalelf finished the group stage without having conceded a single goal. Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s players will face Austria for a place in the last four.
