The excitement of the Women’s IPL will come immediately after the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa from February 9 to 26 next year. There will be five teams in the first season. It will later be expanded to six teams. Many have expressed interest in owning women’s IPL teams.

Mumbai: Reportedly, the much awaited women’s IPL tournament will be held in March next year. PTI reported quoting BCCI sources that the tournament will last for a month.

Currently BCCI conducts women’s T20 Challenge tournament between play-offs of men’s IPL. This will be replaced by the full women’s IPL. The tournament is expected to start in the first week of March.

It is suggested that the BCCI will soon go into the bidding process for the teams. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jai Shah had earlier stated in interviews that the women’s IPL will start next year.

According to the PTI report, the current IPL team owners Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings have all expressed interest in owning women’s teams. Indian women’s cricket superstars like Smriti Manthana, Shefali Verma and Harmanpreet Kaur will all be seen in the Women’s IPL.

Legendary player Mithali Raj, who retired from international cricket in June this year, has also expressed her interest in being a part of the first season of the Women’s IPL.
