Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali is going to Italy to attend the Governing Council meeting of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). He will leave Dhaka on February 13 (Tuesday) on a 7-day official visit.

Abul Hasan Mahmud is attending the meeting of an international organization for the first time after taking charge of the Finance Ministry in the new government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On February 14, the meeting of the governing council consisting of representatives of 177 member countries will be held in the plenary hall of the head office of IFAD in Rome, Italy. The Finance Minister will lead the Bangladesh delegation there.

The next day on February 15, the round table meeting of IFAD governors ie finance ministers of the member countries will be held at the same place. Finance Minister IFAD will return home on February 20 via Singapore after attending the Governing Council meeting.

Note that IFAD was formed on December 15, 1977 in Rome, Italy. The current members of the organization are 177 countries. The current president is Alvaro Lario, a citizen of Spain. He took charge on 1 October 2022 for 4 years. The organization was formed as a result of the 1974 World Food Conference. The conference was held under the auspices of the United Nations in the first half of 1970 to overcome the global food crisis. The International Fund for Agricultural Development was established on 15 December 1977, 3 years after the 1974 conference. The organization was formed to mobilize resources to increase food production and develop nutrition through agricultural development worldwide, especially in the developing world. It is an organ of the United Nations.
