Founded a little over ten years ago, on unproductive land in Caimito, and one of the almost three hundred MSMEs from Artemisa, the Finca Marta agroecological project, as they call themselves, scales previously unimaginable steps.

Little by little and with perseverance, it has been able to demonstrate its productive capacity through an efficient and innovative business management system, with a technological orientation, which has allowed it to generate growing profits and benefits for the family and workers in this sector.

In accordance with this methodology, Finca Marta matures another parallel project of large investments and claims in the Siete Arroyos Community -at least a dozen farms- to diversify offers and increase natural productions, with mechanisms that do not harm the ecosystem and protect the environment. environment, while oxygenating the local economy, training new producers and increasing farmland.

Variety of vegetables and vegetables are priorities in this Caimitense farm.

Special sale for the town

With a view to the communities, they have established a point of sale for the population; with price regulation that, according to Roberto Sánchez Medina, the farm’s technical director, “as part of our corporate social responsibility, offers products at more affordable prices.”

Every good company, with firm foundations and noble purposes, knows that true wealth lies in the customer’s eye, and that this can often be found in the least expected place.

The point of sale “was also created with the aim of increasing the agri-food culture in the municipality, since products are offered that people do not normally know about or do not usually use in daily cooking, such as coriander, parsley, rosemary… which are very healthy and with rich nutritional properties”, clarifies Reinaldo Ramos Hernández, manager of the point, located on Central Street, in Caimito.

The aforementioned place – at the time of this report – had tomato puree on offer, one kilogram at 220 cups; 20lb pumpkin, cachuhca pepper 35lb; onion and garlic paste at 60 and 100 cups respectively; coriander packets at 30 cups, parsley at 60 cups and aniseed at 30 cups; and ají cachucha at 45 cups (two pots).

In addition, they have had melon, mango, mamey, of great acceptance; varied postures; apart, they have ornamental plants, especially cacti, in small formats.

If only, we judge these prices with respect to those of the rest of the market, it is at least an ostensible and necessary alternative in any home.

“What we do is evaluate the most common values and set ours below, always considering not to affect the economy of the company,” explained Ramos Hernández.

Sánchez Medina, assured that the idea is to improve the conditions of the premises and gradually expand the proposals. And he explained that “we already have the authorization of the government for the use of the premises, although the official transfer for its administration is still missing, but it is a matter of time.”

The sales premises have been occupied since December 2022, with prospects for air conditioning to better preserve the products, with displays and greater aesthetics in the future.

Although it is a small place, it is functional and cosy, it only remains to finalize the details to begin the reforms.

Agroecology in the crops favors the productions harvested on the Marta farm.

The philosophy of good

In continuous work, the personnel associated with Finca Marta and the project itself, are characterized by transferring the philosophy of good treatment to the client, education and agrarian culture, which in the territory represents the central axis of the economy and a source of work. underrated.

Beyond income, Finca Marta also sees the need to contribute, pay those most vulnerable sectors of the population. When I visited, they had ready a donation package of 40 kilos of pumpkin and the same number of packages of onion paste destined for the nursing homes, the maternity hospital, and children’s centers in the town.

The image they project always finds a place in sensitivity, the social function of being useful is encouraging in the face of the complex moments that the Cuban economy is going through.

Sometimes -and I witnessed this-, without accounting, the opportunity arises spontaneously to help someone in need who passes by, with a bag of puree or some other product, it is enough to serve a Caimitense family with good will.

And it is about multiplying Finca Marta, its will and knowledge, since turning it into an exception does not contribute to food sovereignty that at the local level, is taking such a boom at this time.

A productive chain can only be achieved by uniting links and with a lot of willpower.
