The coronation of King Charles III takes place this Saturday (6), at Westminster Abbey, in London, and will be attended by around 2,000 guests.

During the ceremony, the oldest member of the royal family to ascend the British throne will receive a series of jewels belonging to the royal family. The historic crown of Saint Edward is among them.

Charles III will only use the item once and it will be placed on the monarch’s head for a short period of time, according to Marca. The other objects that complete the three symbols of royalty are the scepter and the orb.

What is St Edward’s Crown and why is it only worn once?

As the British royal family explained in a video shared on social media, the crown jewels are the most famous treasures in the country, they are part of the royal collection and belong to the monarch, who holds them on behalf of the entire country. There are more than 1,000 jewels, including other orbs, scepters and crowns.

St Edward’s Crown is historically used in the coronation of a new monarch. It was made for the ceremony of Charles II in 1661 – to replace the medieval crown cast in 1649 after the execution of Charles I – and has since been used in all coronation ceremonies.

The object is made of solid gold, weighs just over 2 kilos and is decorated with rubies, amethysts, topaz and sapphires.

However, the item is only used once in a monarch’s reign, namely at the coronation, as it is the most important piece of jewelery in the British royal collection, symbolizing the beginning of the reign.

Although Charles III wanted a modern coronation, with, for example, a guest list, this is a very old tradition of the royal family that is still followed today.
