The ceramist Iona Palau claims the beauty of imperfection with an exposure to Terracotta Museum of the Bisbal d’Empordà. The ceramist show until January 14 at Espai La Peixera a series of pieces that, through the clay deformation cooked at extreme temperatures, it has served her to accept herself. Finding art in what is usually considered a flaw in the world of ceramics has seen herself reflected.

The exhibition, named 40º, is a series of pieces born from Iona Palau’s final research project, carried out during the Superior Degree in Artistic Ceramics at the Industrial School of Barcelona.

Cook at 1,200 degrees

His work is born from a experiment exercise with red claystaking them to the limit until cooking them at 1,200°, a temperature at which the molded parts with this material they deform and undergo what in the ceramic world is called pyroplastic deformation.

Although this phenomenon is usually conceived as a defect, since the piece loses its initial shape, in this case the ceramist deliberately seeks it and tries to control it by generating different thicknesses in the walls of her creations.

Clay subjected to extreme temperatures deforms, a phenomenon that the artist deliberately seeks in these pieces

Iona Palau’s pieces become a work of art the moment the ceramist begins to see herself reflected in them, and realizes that the disfigurement she seeks is actually a expression of the deformation of his spine, with a scoliosis of 40°. Hence the title of the exhibition, 40°.

This exhibition claims the beauty of imperfect forms, and breaks with the conventional idea that beauty resides in the symmetry of bodies and objects.

In the words of the ceramist herself: “this creative process has served to reconcile me with my back and accept it as it is”.

In addition to having attended the Higher Degree Training Course in Plastic Arts and Design in Artistic Ceramics at the La Industrial Art School, Iona Palau has also trained in artisanal pottery at the Bisbal Ceramics School and is degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. 40° is his first solo exhibition as a ceramist.

The Iona Palau show is part of the cycle of exhibitions that theAssociation of Ceramists of Bisbal curated in this room of the Museum, designed to promote new talents in the world of contemporary artistic ceramics.
