Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said that the adoption by parliament of a new law on denial of asylum at the border will allow a reassessment of the situation regarding the operation of checkpoints with Russia, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“It is obvious that new instruments may allow for a reassessment (of the situation on the border with Russia),” Rantanen said on MTV3, commenting on the possible opening of checkpoints on the border with Russia.
Rantanen reiterated that the opening of the checkpoints on the border with Russia depends on the security situation.
On July 12, the Finnish parliament approved the law “On expulsion”. For it to come into force, a joint decision of the government and the President of Finland is required. The cabinet is expected to make such a decision next week. The law will be in force for one year. We are talking about temporary measures to combat so-called instrumental migration (when refugees are allegedly used as a way to achieve certain goals). The government will have the right to limit the acceptance of applications from migrants for international protection in the immediate vicinity of a certain part of the Finnish border in order to ensure the sovereignty and security of the country.
On May 19, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said in an interview with Yle Radio Suomi that the bill would allow the border with Russia to be “carefully opened.”
