Finland, the land of saunas, the thousand lakes and Santa Claus, is also the happiest country in the world in 2023, as it has been in the previous five years. At least this is the title given to it by the UN World Happiness Report 2023, in which Spain appears in 32nd place.

The experts who prepare the report carry out surveys among citizens of all countries and evaluate factors such as income, health, social connections, the feeling of freedom to make road decisions, generosity and the absence of corruption.

The report highlights that the perception of the planet’s citizens about their lives continues to be “remarkably resilient” despite having to go through a pandemic for three long years. In this time, the report considers that what has most influenced keeping spirits high has been the “proscial” acts and the support that people have given each other, higher than in previous reports.

In this way, Finland, the least densely populated country in the European Union and which usually stands out for its powerful public welfare system and its low corruption rates, continues to lead the happiest countries in the world, followed by others from the north of Europe, Denmark and Iceland, all of them with high rates of equality and vital evaluation of the respondents.

The Nordic countries -with the exception of Sweden- also managed to maintain lower death rates from Covid-19 thanks to the quick and effective measures adopted, which the report considers highly relevant.

Israel is the fourth happiest country in the world, according to the report, climbing five positions in just one year with high levels of trust among its population, followed by the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg, completing the top 10. of the list. Spain falls three places with respect to the previous report and is located at number 32.

Lithuania is the country that has experienced the greatest rise in the ranking in recent years, from the 52nd position it occupied in 2017 to the 20th position this year. At the bottom are Afghanistan, a country ravaged by a long war and which fell to the Taliban in 2021, and Lebanon, which has been mired in a severe economic crisis since the explosion that devastated its capital, Beirut, in 2020.

The World Happiness Report has been published every March 20 for 10 years, when the UNO General Assembly adopted resolution 66/281, proclaiming that day as World Happiness Day.
