Finnish Police Investigate Suspected Break-Ins at MP Homes

Finnish authorities launched a preliminary investigation on Thursday into a series of suspected break-ins at the homes of members of parliament. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo warned that a foreign power could be behind the intrusions, noting that the risk of election interference must be taken seriously.

Police Probe Mysterious Intrusions Across Helsinki Area

Finnish police have opened a preliminary inquiry into multiple reports of members of parliament experiencing suspected break-ins at their residences in the Helsinki area in the last year. The Helsinki Police Department is leading the investigation in close coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation.

Investigators found no signs of forced entry at the targeted homes, and nothing appears to have been stolen or damaged. Instead, lawmakers noticed subtle anomalies that caught their attention, such as doors left open or interior lights switched on when the occupants remembered leaving them off. According to information obtained by Yle, fewer than 20 members of parliament are suspected to have been targeted.

Since the Kremlin initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Finland has remained on high alert. The Nordic nation shares a 1,340-kilometer, or 830-mile, frontier with Russia, having abandoned its long-standing military non-alignment policy to officially enter NATO in April 2023.

Previously, Helsinki accused Moscow of engaging in hybrid warfare after a coordinated surge of migrants arrived at their shared border.

Speaker Jussi Halla-aho Confirms Incidents

Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho addressed reporters at a press conference on Thursday, confirming that the legislature had been made aware of a significant number of break-ins and attempted intrusions spanning roughly the past year.

“I cannot comment precisely on the number of suspected cases known to us, but in any event, it is significant.”

Jussi Halla-aho, Speaker of Parliament

Halla-aho noted that the affected lawmakers do not share a common political or demographic background, spanning different parties and genders. He added that the subtle markers left behind could have been deliberately left visible to signal an outsider’s presence.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo Warns of Foreign Threat

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the suspected intrusions are being treated with utmost seriousness and suggested that a foreign power could be responsible for the campaign.

“It is very possible. Quite possible in this day and age.”

Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister

Orpo connected the security breaches to upcoming parliamentary elections just six months away, warning that Russia has sought to influence elections in several European countries. He emphasized that any attempt to destabilize the nation would ultimately strengthen public unity rather than fracture support for Ukraine or national security.

President Alexander Stubb Condemns Attack

Speaking from an event in Rovaniemi marking the arrival of Finland’s new F-35 fighter jets, President Alexander Stubb offered a blunt assessment of the ongoing security situation.

“An attack against a member of parliament is an attack against democracy. It should not be allowed or accepted in any form… I stand in support of every member of parliament.”

Alexander Stubb, President of Finland

Parliament subsequently advised all members of parliament to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and file formal police complaints if necessary.
