Fire breaks out at foreign worker shelter in Maldives: 9 Indians killed

The fire broke out in the overcrowded accommodation of foreign workers.
Officials informed that 10 bodies were recovered from the burnt building.

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured in a fire that broke out in accommodation housing foreign workers in the Maldivian capital, Male, on Thursday, the fire service said.

Known as an upmarket holiday destination, the archipelago’s capital Male is one of the world’s most populous cities.

Fire service officials said 10 bodies were recovered from the top floor of the building, which was damaged in a midnight fire at an auto repair garage. They also said that it took around four hours to extinguish the fire.

Meanwhile, a security official said nine Indians and one Bangladeshi national were among the dead.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India is collecting the information of the Indians who died in the fire.

The Indian High Commission in Maldives has condoled the loss of lives in the fire. “We are deeply saddened by the fire incident in Male, which has claimed lives of several people, including Indian nationals. We are in close contact with the Maldivian authorities,” the high commission tweeted.

About half of the population of the Maldives resides in Malé, most of whom are believed to be from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
