Fire Erupts Near Homes in Agia Marina, Koropi: Residents Evacuated as Firefighting Efforts Intensify

A fire is currently underway in Agia Marina, Koropi. The fire is burning in low vegetation but is close to homes.

The firefighting forces operating on the fire front have been strengthened. According to the Fire Department, the fire broke out around 11:15.

At the scene, 75 firefighters are operating with 4 teams of forest commandos, 30 vehicles, and two aircraft and five helicopters deployed from the air. Volunteers and municipal water trucks are providing assistance.

Residents were initially alerted via 112 to be on standby and subsequently to evacuate the area.

Traffic Diversions

Due to the outbreak of the fire, traffic diversions are being implemented for vehicles. Specifically, at the intersection of Agia Marina Avenue and Agios Dimitrios in the Ambelona area of Koropi, on Agia Marina Avenue and Taxiarchon, as well as at the intersection of Karpathos and Ithaca.

Additionally, diversions are taking place on Agios Dimitrios Avenue and Athens-Sounio, on Agios Dimitrios and Spartis, on Charavgi and Nafpaktos, and at the intersection of Charavgi and Spartis.

Thick black smoke covers the settlements

As reported by MEGA, there are scattered hotspots in the area where the fire is burning, with the firefighting aircraft making continuous water drops. The thick black smoke covers the sky above the settlements.

It should be noted that in several areas of the fire front, there is no road network, where seven hiking teams from the Fire Department are already operating, contributing to the work of the aerial forces.

As the mayor of Kropia stated, “the fire is heading towards the area of Kselafthaki in Agios Dimitrios,” while the winds seem to be pushing the fire towards several homes in the area.

112 Notifications

To inform those in the area, three notifications were sent via 112, at 11:25, 11:34, and 12:00.

The third notification informed those in the areas of Megalo Metochi and Kselafthaki to evacuate towards Agios Dimitrios and the Coastal Avenue.

The previous one was a directive for residents to evacuate towards Koropi – Agia Marina Avenue.

The Fire Department was alerted shortly before noon, and initially sent a force of 55 firefighters, 10 vehicles, and 4 walking teams, along with four aircraft and two helicopters to the scene.

To extinguish the fire, construction machinery and municipal water trucks have been mobilized.
